Cellphones No Brain Cancer Risk
New research # 26.
Cellphone-No brain cancer risk is the topic of our today’s article. Cellphones are now a necessary part of our lives. I have met the people who sleep during nights, keeping their cellphone under their pillow, or at a place to reach their cellphone immediately. Many people become upset if their cellphone is not in their hands or pocket. A cellphone is the most favorite toy for small children these days. WHO issued recently a research review discussing previous and present studies declaring that Cellphones Not linked to brain Cancer.

In the beginning of cell phones usages, there was once a wide spread fear that using a cellphone could cause the risk of brain cancer, as the cellphones were held very close to head for a longer period of time. The fear still remains somewhere in the sub conscious of old people.
The World Health Organization (WHO) research
WHO organized a research. to find out the truth about the above spread fear , and published a research review recently in “ Environment International “ .
The researchers examined 63 studies which were completed between 1994 and 2022 including participants in 22 countries. Eleven investigators from 9 countries assessed these studies carefully. The researchers focused on the effects of radio frequencies from cellphones, base stations, transmitters and occupational exposure.
The researchers examined deeply on cancers in the brain of adults and children. The cancer of the pituitary gland, salivary glands and risk of leukemia were also examined. (Salivary glands contain three major cell types: acinar cells, ductal cells, and myoepithelial cells. Despite their different locations, each of these glands shares the same fundamental structure, branched ducts that open into the oral cavity and glandular secretory end pieces, called acini, that produce saliva. Saliva plays an important role in supporting our oral and overall health. For example, saliva: Keeps our mouth and throat lubricated and comfortable. Moistens food so it’s easier to swallow).
The researchers declared that in spite of the huge increased use of wireless technology during last two decades , there was no case of brain cancer reported. The researchers also added that they examined the people who use to make long phone calls most of their time. Some people who were using mobile phone for last two decade were also included in the research.
According to the researchers :
- “There is “moderate certainty evidence” that radiation from mobile phone use close to the head ” likely does not increase the risk ” of several nervous systems cancers of childhood brain tumors.
- There is ” low certainty evidence ” that radiation from cordless phone use near the head ” may not increase the risk ” of glioma, meningioma or acoustic neuroma. (A glioma is a type of primary tumor that starts in the glial cells of the brain or spinal cord. They are cancerous but some are extremely slow to develop. Gliomas comprise about 30 percent of all brain tumors and central nervous system tumors, and 80 percent of all malignant brain tumors).
- There is ” moderate certainty evidence ” that whole-body radiation from fixed-site transmitters such as broadcasting antennas or base stations ” likely does not increase ” the risk of childhood leukema. There is ” low certainty evidence” that this type of radiation ” may not increase ” the risk of childhood brain tumors.
- There is ” low certainty evidence ” that occupational radiation exposure ” may not increase ” the risk of brain cancers.
Wael Harb , MD, a hematologist and medical oncologist at Memorial Care Cancer Institute at Orange Coast and Saddleback Medical Centers in California said in his own words :
” He is impressed with the findings. I find this review to be comprehensive and methodologically sound, adding confidence to the growing body of evidence that RF-EMF exposure from mobile phones is not linked to an increased risk of brain tumors like glioma and meningioma . The authors carefully evaluated multiple sources and accounted for potential biases and confounders, making their conclusions more robust. Overall, it aligns with prior findings and provides further reassurance that typical mobile phone use is unlikely to pose a significant cancer risk “.
Naveed Wagle, MD, a neuro-oncologist at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute in Santa Monica , California, and an associate professor of translational neurosciences at Saint John’s Cancer Institute in Santa Monica agrees this latest review is compelling. He said in his own words :
” Much of the data (in the past) has been very small studies and limited tumor types. This study allows for the pooling of these studies to give more robust statistical significance. The lack of (increased) tumor risk see in this data set is further reassurance that radio frequency is not a major risk factor”.

Then & Now.
International Agency for Research on Cancer ( IARC) classified the radiation from mobile phones as “possibly carcinogenic or class 2B”. (A carcinogen is a substance, organism or agent capable of causing cancer. Carcinogens may occur naturally in the environment (such as ultraviolet rays in sunlight and certain viruses) or may be generated by humans (such as automobile exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke). Class 2B ( Group or class B =Possibly carcinogenic to humans” There is some evidence that it can cause cancer in humans but at present it is far from conclusive ) . This classification has not been reassessed since 2013. A group from IARC is recommending that the classification be re-evaluated as soon as possible.
The latest research review and previous studies including one from back in 2011, reveal that radiation from mobile phone use does not increase the brain cancer risk.
Wael Harb, MD , explained in his own worlds;
“The consensus among experts has shifted over time. Early studies raised concerns about the potential carcinogenic effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) , leading to the classification of mobile phone use as possibly carcinogenic by the IARC .However, more recent and comprehensive research, including this WHO -led review, has found little to no evidence supporting a significant link between RF-EMF exposure and brain cancer. Most expert now agree that the body of evidence suggest no consistent association between mobile phone use and increased risk of brain cancer, particularly given the lack of rise in brain cancer incidence despite the global surge in mobile phone use “.
Mobile phones & radiation.
The National Cancer Institute issued a clarification discussing cellphones and cancer risk . The institute explained that:
- The mobile phone emit radiofrequency radiation.
- The radio waves from a cellphone are considered low-frequency and low-energy.
- The Low-level type of radiation is not capable of damaging DNA and increasing the risk of cancer..
- On the other hands, x-ray machines, radon ( A radioactive gas that is released by uranium, a substance found in soil and rock. Breathing in too much radon can damage lung cells and may lead to lung cancer). and cosmic rays release ionizing radiation which is considered high frequency and high energy.
- This type of radiation can easily damage DNA , greatly causing changes to genes . Such changes may increase the risk of cancer.
- The institute also explained that decreasing rates of brain cancer and other central nervous system cancers are comparatively not increasing instead of the increased use of mobile phones.
- Harb explained further saying that ” Based on the current evidence, there is little reason for concern regarding frequent mobile phone use or living near radio transmission towers. Multiple large studies have found no consistent link between RF-EMF exposure and brain cancer risk. For those who are still cautious , simple measures like using hands-free device or limiting prolong phone calls can be adopted , though they are likely unnecessary. The important thing is to stay informed as new research emerges, but right now the risk appears to be minimal”.
- above opinions from specialist doctors are more than enough that ” Cellphones-No Brain Cancer Risk”.
Risk factors for brain cancer.
In spite of the advancement of medical knowledge, the causes of brain cancer are still as a ” mystery”.
Speaking on causes of brain cancer, Wael Harb, MD , said :
” For most brain cancers, we still do not fully understand the causes. Some known risk factors include genetic predisposition, family history of brain rumors, and exposure to ionizing radiation ( such as radiation therapy for other cancers). Age is also a factor, as brain cancer tends to occur more frequently in older adults. Additionally , inherited conditions like neurofibromatosis can increase risk. While environmental factors, such as exposure to certain chemicals, have been suggested as potential contributors, the evidence is inconclusive.”
Naveed Wagle, MD, agreed “the causes of brain cancer are elusive. Most brain tumors are sporadic, meaning not due to a clear cause. We still do not fully understand the risk factor that lead to tumor formation. A small but significant portion are due to genetic predisposition. This is typically a family history of a specific tumor type. Another rare but established risk factor is radiation exposure , such as nuclear fallout, radiation therapy”.
Erqi Pollom , MD, an associate professor of radiation oncology at Stanford University in California Point out as under;
” There is no definite evidence that mobile devices are associated with an increased risk of developing cancer. Known risk factors for developing brain cancer include exposure to ionizing radiation ( such as from x-rays ) having certain genetic disorders, and being immunocompromised . However, some people may develop brain cancer without having any of these known risk factors”.

Achievements:
- A new review of previous research concludes that radiation from cellphones is not likely to increase a person’s risk of brain cancer.
- Their findings align with studies from the past decade that state that the increase of brain cancers has not increased despite a large increase in the use of mobile devices.
- Experts say the causes of brain cancer are still somewhat a mystery. but it appears wireless technology is not a risk factor.
