Best time for drinking coffee.

According to the researchers , drinking a cup of coffee in the morning have a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and overall lower mortality risk , as compared to those who drink coffee through out the day or those who don’t drink coffee at all.

A Study.

A study , the first of its kind to find out the coffee drinking routine , and if the time of day of drinking coffee affects on death result. The finding of study were published in European Heart Journal on January 8.

There were more than 40,000 adults from the National Health & Nutrition Survey, and 1,463 adult from the Women’s and Men’s Lifestyle Validation Study. The participants were also questioned about quantity of coffee and caffeine they consume.

The study participants were divided into 2 groups:

Group 1 = Around 48 % participants do not drink coffee at all.

Group 2 = The remaining participants were divided in to two sections according to their coffee drinking timings:

  • Section 1 = Around 1/3rd participants were used to drink their  coffee in the morning, and rarely drink  in the afternoon.
  • Section 2 = The remaining participants ( 16 % of the participants ) told that they drink coffee through all the day and evening too.

Only the  morning coffee drinker showed a significant risk  reduction in cardiovascular disease – related death , and in all-cause mortality.

The above study led by Lu Qi, MD, PhD, HCA Regents Distinguished Chair and Professor at the Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University, offer compelling data to observe not only to know how much coffee you drink, and at what time too. Dr. Qi said in his own words that:

Drinking coffee in the morning shows a better beneficial relation than the all-day drinking, with cardiovascular and all-cause morality”.

Study researchers found after nearly decade-long follow up period, that morning coffee drinker had significantly very low risk of all-cause mortality , and cardiovascular disease-related death , when comparing to those who do not drink coffee in the morning.

When you compare morning coffee drinker with non  morning  drinker, you will find a 16 % lower risk of all-cause mortality in morning  drinkers. Beside that morning  drinkers will have a decreased lower risk by 31 % in cardiovascular disease-related death.

Thomas Luscher, MD , consultant cardiologist & director of research , education and development at Royal Brampton and Harefield Hospital in the U.K. explained the body diurnal cycle :

” The body has a diurnal cycle (Most humans are diurnal, meaning they are usually awake during the day and asleep at night. However, this is not the case for many other animals, which enjoy nightlife and rest throughout the day.) of waking, going and relaxing and eventually sleeping. Morning drinking  goes along this cycle, while continued drinking , particularly in the afternoon disrupts this cycle and sleep “.

How much you drink in the morning also affect heart health. The study finding point outs  to the fact that heavy drinking in the morning , say two to three cups or more, had a greater reduction in disease-related death risk. It was also found that the risk was smaller among those who drink morning  one cup or lesser.

The researcher went through the investigation , if drinking in the morning has any effects on cancer – related mortality. They did not find any association with drinking in the morning, after noon or  all day long.

An important points to keep in your mind is that this study was conducted in U.K. and U.S.A. Other countries have different culture and living/ drinking habits. It is quite possible that the findings in the studies conducted in U.K. or U.S.A. will possibly not show the same results, or  effects in other countries. More over the  study have many limitations. For example, the morning drinker family have good source of income. They were whites .The study can not find if morning drinking would have the same affects  on the  people of other races.

Some medical doctors have  their opinion that this study has limited values.  Their opinions  are as under :

Dr. Abha Khandelwal , MD, a professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford Medicine pointed out that :

” Due to the observational, self -reported data, the study has limited value. I don’t think you can say timing of caffeine is an important factor in mitigating mortality risk …..There is not a strong or rigorous scientific basis——at most there is an association with coffee intake.

It is too early to make recommendations based on this research . At most one can say if you are a  drinker, consider limiting it to AM hours, but this study is not designed or powered to talk about causality . I think a lot more has to be done in a much more scientifically rigorous way to make bold statements to change  behavior”.

Dr. Lu Qi, MD, PhD, HCA, Regents Distinguished Chair & Professor at the Celia Scott Weatherhead  School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University said his own words as :

” Late drinking may disturb sleeping and hormones such as melatonin , which affect the body’s circadian rhythm .(Circadian rhythms are the physical, mental, and behavioral changes an organism experiences over a 24-hour cycle. Light and dark have the biggest influence on circadian rhythms, but food intake, stress, physical activity, social environment, and temperature also affect them). This may partly account for the observations. If drinking 2 cups or more per day, it is preferable to drink only in the morning “.
